Since 1952, Open Door Mission has been providing a helping hand to those in need.
Our new vision & strategy
Established in 1952, Open Door Mission’s journey began in the heart of Oakland, California, where we opened our doors as a humble soup kitchen and homeless shelter. Back then, our mission was simple yet profound: to offer a helping hand to those in need within our community. Throughout the years, we’ve relied on volunteers and the generosity of donations from the local community and other organizations to continue to provide for the community.
Now, as we stand on the threshold of a new era, we are embarking on a new, more sustainable strategy to address the root causes of food insecurity and socio-economic challenges. Central to this strategy is our decision to acquire farmland nestled in the serene landscapes of the Sierra Foothills in Northern California. Here, we will cultivate a sustainable ecosystem, employing regenerative agricultural practices to raise livestock and grow nutritious produce.
But our mission extends far beyond farming. We are committed to empowering individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive independently. Through comprehensive educational programs, we will impart foundational life principles such as integrity, self-responsibility, and self-ownership. Our curriculum will include the teaching of practical skills ranging from mechanical and farming techniques to organizational proficiency as well as health & spiritual practices that empower individuals to become active and fulfilled contributors to their community.
Guiding us on this journey is a diverse and dedicated board, carefully selected for their expertise in health and fitness, professional athletics, farming, and law. Together, we are united in our commitment to realizing this bold vision and creating a brighter, more sustainable future for our community.
Join us as we embark on this remarkable journey of growth, compassion, and empowerment. Together, we can cultivate positive change and sow the seeds of a thriving community for generations to come.
